COCO SUBSTRATE
The coco substrate is used as an excellent growing medium intended for soil-less culture in green houses (tomatoes, cucumbers etc) and hydroponics applications.

A. Characteristics
  1. ORIGIN

The product COCOSOL substrate, of natural and organic origin is obtained by the crushing and processing of the external part of the coconut fruit also known as coconut husk.
  1. ASPECT

TYPE Description Picture
Type 20 It is quite thin and made of irregular particles of diameter varying between 0.5 to 5 mm , mixed with thin and thread-like fibres with length around 0 to 20 mm.

Type 30 of medium shape, and made of irregular particles like in the type 20 above, with most of the fibre length measuring around 30mm.

Type 40 In pieces of a diameter from 5 to 20 mm, and length from 30 to 70 mm of irregular shapes resembling to the pine bark.

Type 50 Quite big in size, is made of long fibres like in type 40 with the overall length of fibre around 50mm.

  1.   WEIGHT

The fibre has a specific weight of around 100kg/m3 that can vary according to its moisture content.
The emptiness percentage is around 500%.
It is a light and porous material with a high draining power.
  1. WATER RETENTION

The coir fibre has a low absorbing power. However, its water retention capacity in weight is 300%. The retained water is essentially capillary water that is easily available for plants.
  1. BIODEGRABILITY

Being of organic origin, the product has an excellent resistance to biodegradability.
The transformation in soluble humus in the ground can take several years (5 to 20years) depending on the biological activity of the soil.
  1. PHYTOSANITARY

The coir fibre contains no foreign bodies, no seeds, no mushrooms parasites of plants, and no insects or nematodes. It is a biologically healthy product.

B. USAGE

Given its characteristics and properties, the COCOSOL Substrate is much used by professional nurseries, horticulturists, market gardeners or truck farmers and as well as in the preparation of lawns (green areas, garden, golf course, football pitch) and of course in amateur gardening.
  1. PROFESSIONAL NURSERIES

The COCOSOL Substrate is particularly interesting in the composition of compost for potted plants. Mixed in proportion from 30% to 60% to other material like PEAT (Coco Peat), compost or pine needles , it  represents the main basic element, *the backbone* of the compost, and that is due to its inalterability, lightness, porosity and high water retention.
For this usage, we recommend our type 20 or 30 COCOSOL substrate.
  1. HORTICULTURE

    • The COCOSOL Substrate can be used for potted culture which gives a very important development of the root crops. In that case we suggest our type 20 substrate.

    • For floral culture (carnations, gerberas, roses, bulb flowers), the COCOSOL Substrate can be used as a pure sole medium. It is an important element of the substrate that guarantees a sufficient porosity and good water retention. We suggest you use the type 20, and for the culture of orchid, use the type 30.

    • The COCOSOL Substrate can be used as an amendment of soil, especially for clayish soil. It has in deed the power to make them more light and porous and facilitate the drainage of water.  The major advantage compared to other types of mediums (PEAT and manure etc) is that a single use of the substrate improves structure of the clay.  In fact, its slow degradation creates a stable structure in the long run.  We recommend the use of our substrate type 20 or 30.

    • The COCOSOL Substrate behaves well as mulch for all types of culture of flowers.  This type of mulch help avoid any soil compacting and the appearance of a scabby surface, allowing the infiltration of water and avoiding the evaporation of water by capillarity.  The coir fibre has an optimal insulating power.  It helps avoid the overheating of ground in summer time and the cooling down of the ground in winter time.

  1. MARKET GARDENING

THE COCOSOL Substrate can be solely applied in soilless culture (tomatoes, melons, sweet peppers, cucumbers, strawberry) or like amendment or mulch.
The mulch is particularly recommended in sandy land to avoid the overheating and the evaporation of water. We suggest the use of our substrate type 20 or 30.
  1. LAWN

The success of a lawn is often due to the preparation of the seedbed.  The excessive compacting of the ground due to the stamping or to the frequent irrigation is often the cause of failure of formation and conservation of the lawn.
The COCOSOL Substrate with its great characteristics is an ideal material for the preparation of the lawn seedbed because it brings lightness, porosity, water retention, drainage and stability to the physical and mechanical structure.  It can be mixed to the soil in depth of 10 cm, with a layer of 2 to 3 cm of COCOSOL Substrate on the surface to ease the germination of the seeds.
For that reason, the COCOSOL Substrate can be used for private garden, public green space and everywhere the quality requirements are of high standard.
For this usage we recommend the type 20.
  1. AMATEUR GARDENING

In that area, the COCOSOL Substrate, in its various aspects is extremely adaptable.
Very light and easy to carry around, it can be used as sole substrate (no need to mix with other substrate or compost), mixed with compost for plants in pots, vases or containers or mixed with soil to improve its porosity and water retention capacity, like mulch in ground cover or simply to create a patch of colour.
  1. PLAYGROUND

Use the COCOSOL Substrate type 50, very flexible and draining.
